Roger West

Family and friends of Roger West are raising money to help cover in home care and other medical expenses. Inspiration is a word that would define Roger. When you are around him, he will encourage you even though he himself is dealing with his own health battles.

Speak with him a while and you realize that you have met an inspirational person that can change your life. Someone who is truly happy to be alive and who shares that joy with everyone. To be in his company is to laugh and be uplifted. You are grateful to be able to call him friend.

Roger is a 46-year-old, fun, giving, inspirational man who loves his wife, Rebecca, and daughter, Abigail, more than anything in the world. Over the past 2-3 years Roger began to notice some changes in his coordination. He kept it to himself as long as he could. After he could no longer hide it, he sought medical help. He has been diagnosed with Quadriparesis which causes weakness in muscles and paralysis. This illness has changed the West family’s lives in almost every way imaginable, yet Roger’s spirit remains intact. He and Rebecca are devoted to each other and to facing their new life together with faith, love, courage, and grace.

Fast forward to the present, Roger is now completely confined to a wheelchair and needs help with daily care. What is remarkable about Roger, is that he works every day by using assistive technology and other tools. He is an inspiration to so many from his positive outlook on life and his can do attitude. He continues to be the best that he can be for his precious family.

Roger recently contracted COVID. He had to have a tracheostomy and is now on a vent. They have transferred him to a long term facility to see if they can wean him off the vent along with doing some physical and occupational therapy. The tracheotomy will be permanent and mechanical ventilation will be used at night with the goal of support ventilation during the day. This is to be determined by his pulmonologist.

He now has Acute Respiratory Failure on top of what he was already dealing with in terms of Quadriparesis condition. He deals with Autonomic dysreflexia and he is really having an increase with it. He is able to speak through the vent but after a while he’s tired and worn out. Once equipment is set up and nursing/staff, he should be able to come home. We will be moving to find a more suitable home for his needs and to be closer to our support.

Through prior donations we have been able to purchase a handicap accessible van and other valuable medical equipment. Unfortunately, insurance does not always pick up certain costs. Roger is now at a stage of needing assistance with in-home care that insurance will not cover. In addition, there will be other medical equipment that he will need. Because of that, we have undertaken this fundraiser on his behalf to give back to Roger for the inspiration he has given us all.

A Note From Roger:

Hello, Just a little bit about myself. I was a vocational Minister and most currently a Worship Pastor for close to 30 years. Several years ago I began to notice weakness in my singing voice, leg, and a tremor in one of my hands. Over a time span of 2-3 years, I have lost all mobility in my legs and began to deal with paralysis. I started physical therapy and occupational therapy, but we really did not see any major improvement.

My condition has only deteriorated. I am now having weakness in my trunk and arms, had to have a feeding tube placed along with respiratory difficulty. I now require home health aides to help me with daily living. This is considered private duty care which my insurance does not cover. There are other medical equipment and supplies that are not covered by insurance that will be needed as well. Thank you for your support in whatever amount you are able to contribute.
