Hello everyone, my name is Karina, and today I have the honor of sharing the story of my father, Ruben Barajas Hernandez—a man who has spent his life rising above the very hardships that tried to break him.

My father has been a fighter for as long as he has been alive. His battle did not begin in adulthood; it began at the age of five. While other children were still learning their lessons in school, he was pulled out and sent to the fields to work. In his home, education was not valued. His childhood was treated as something optional, something disposable. He never had the chance to simply be a little boy.

He also learned too early what fear felt like. Abuse was something he witnessed and endured. By the age of 13, he made a decision no child should ever have to make.He left home to save himself. Even then, with so much taken from him, he chose a different path. He chose to become a man of honor, gentleness, and integrity. A man who would one day raise his own children with love and dignity, as our Heavenly Father Jesus Christ has taught us.

My father found refuge with his older brother, who had walked the same painful road years before. Under his brother’s roof, he began to reclaim the childhood he never had. He learned to read and write. Imagine that, after years of being told education was not meant for him, he persevered and excelled. That alone speaks volumes about the kind of man he is.

He worked agricultural jobs for years, surviving in a new country with a new language, sustained by determination that never seemed to run out. He fell in love, built a home, and was blessed with nine children. We grew up watching a man who never let hardship harden his heart or cloud his mind. Even when money was tight, he provided the best he could alongside my mother with incredible grace. He never raised a hand in anger. Instead, he listened, he tried to understand, and he loved us with a steady, patient, and safe love, the kind of love he never received as a child.

When people speak about my father, they speak first of his character. His kindness, humility, and quiet strength. He is the kind of man whose goodness is felt rather than announced, the kind of man who makes you believe that with faith, one can survive anything.

And so our family continues to pray—for a new kidney, for a second chance, for the hope that this Christmas might carry a spark of the miracle we have been kneeling for.

I humbly ask that you consider blessing my father with your generosity. He has spent his life turning hardship into possibility, living with purpose, and showing others the difference between being defined by circumstance or allowing God to take the wheel. His faith has always been bigger than his hardship. He did not break, he survived and thrived.

A miracle would not only change his life, it would honor the story of a man who has spent every chapter fighting to be better than the world he was born into.
