On March 2nd, Sandy underwent a living donor liver transplant due to non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. It was an ABO-incompatible transplant, which means that her and her donor (a family member) did not have the same blood type!
The transplant was a success and the new liver started working even before they closed the incision! Her donor is also doing amazingly.

Now we are on the journey of healing and then getting back to normal life!

There have been many things that are out of pocket expenses for her and Janet before, during, and after the surgery. During the month leading up to her transplant, she needed to make many trips back and forth from Butler to Pittsburgh for treatments. For a few of the appointments, she had to find local lodging (at a hotel) and that will be out of pocket for her (about $700!). She also started the anti-rejection meds before the surgery. The meds aren’t completely covered by insurance and, depending on the med and the dosage can be extremely expensive. We won’t know the exact meds and dosages until she’s ready to be discharged.

Any donations in her honor to Help Hope Live will help her and Janet cover these travel, lodging, and medicine expenses that they will incur during this time.
