Help Sara (Moore) Hernandez get through a Heart and Liver Transplant

If you’ve met Sara, you remember Sara. Her wit, thoughtfulness, intelligence and the fact that she is hilarious, come together to make a one-of-a-kind memorable human. She is one of the most true and honest people you will ever come across. She lives her life to the fullest and has never let anything stand in her way. We want to help her continue to live her life with the passion and gusto that she has up to this point.

Sara, born with a congenital heart defect, has been overcoming obstacles since day one. Her will to survive had taken her through 12 surgeries, eight of those being open heart surgeries, and many many more pokes, prods, and procedures over the years. With the support of her parents every step of the way, along with her family, husband, friends, and people whom she has charmed along the way, she has come back from blindness, paralysis, and death itself to create a beautiful life for herself.

She now lives in Portland with her husband, and a menagerie of furry family members including her beloved horses and Shiba Inus. She works full time as an early childhood educator and part time as a librarian using her three hard earned college degrees.

This past winter, Sara learned it was time for the next step in her medical journey. Her compromised heart has been hard on her little body, and her liver has gotten to the point of failure. Her doctors have determined that a combined heart and liver transplant is what needs tohappen to prolong her life and maintain her quality of life.

Sara has a job with good insurance, and her family is willing to help as much as they can, which makes it possible for her to even get on the transplant list. The costs that go along with what is about to happen, however, are insurmountable for us, and that is why we are reaching out for additional support.

Sara’s recovery process will be a long one. She is first looking at a minimum of three months in the hospital post operation, followed by three months living at an apartment with a family caregiver next to Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA. Every three months she needs to travel to check in with her doctor there until she gets the ‘call.’ Once she does get the call, her basic living expenses will still need to be paid. There will be medications she will need to take for the rest of her life so her body does not reject the new organs, and we all know there are many unexpected expenses along the way.

All of these costs are overwhelming, and we all want to focus our energy on supporting Sara through this pre and post operative time. Every donation is appreciated more than you know.
