Shan Brekke

Family and friends of Shan Brekke are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a kidney Transplant. Shan has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

Shan is a 52-year-old that is dedicated to his family and friends. He was diagnosed with kidney problem over ten years ago. He’s been trying to manage it with medications, diet and daily activity. As of March of 2025, Dr discovered he was in need of a Transplant. He is on the wait list and is waiting for a donor kidney to become available.

Shan has always been obsessed with locomotives of all kinds. His favorite is BNSF locomotive. Loves playing card games of any kind. Although cribbage will always be his go to. He’s the type of guy to strike up a conversation with a perfect stranger and somehow by the end of the conversation they are best friend. If you can’t reach him the first place to look is a lake. Even when he can’t be fishing for real, he has his fishing handheld game to keep him entertained until he can get to that lake.

He was an active Boy Scout leader however since the diagnosis he has had to take a step back. Some of the things that he struggles with since being diagnosed is constantly retaining fluids. With the constant fluid problem his joints and bones just ach nonstop. The constant fluid has also caused pneumonia on a reg basis no matter what he does to prevent it.

Shan is fundraising to help with out of pocket expensive with the surgery, medications, and relocating temporarily to be closer to his transplant team for 6 weeks after his hospital stay.

Shan’s hope is that his kidney transplant will allow him to go back to helping with his local community, working with the Boy Scouts, and get back to an active life.
