Shanda Gibson

Hi, my name is Shanda Gibson. I am 51 years old and was diagnosed with cirrhosis about two years ago. I have made some lifestyle changes but at this time my liver has been scarred to the point where I was placed on the transplant list at the end of October 2025.

I have many physical and mental challenges that are from a failing liver. I have some bleeding which causes hemoglobin and platelets to decrease which leads to bruising, extreme fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. I have fluid build up in my abdomen and legs, for which I take medication. I have missed a substantial amount of work due to my illness. This has led to compounded stress and anxiety.

I used to enjoy playing sports, especially basketball and softball. I am no longer able to enjoy these and other things I used to be able to do. I am hoping with a transplant I will be able to one day resume these activities.

The only path to recovery for me is through a transplant, which I am patiently awaiting. This surgery is very difficult and comes with a lifetime of after care and medication to prevent my body from rejecting the transplant. Although insurance covers some expenses, it does not cover all. I will be in the hospital for approximately two weeks for the surgery and initial recovery. I will need 24/7 care after I return home for two to three months. Total recovery time is around six months to a year in which I will be unable to work. I will need home health care and possibly physical and occupational health therapy. The medication alone, even with insurance, ranges from $300-$500 per month. I will be under the doctor’s care for a year after the transplant. There will be many visits and testing done after and I will need transportation to and from and possible stay  closer to the hospital for several weeks. It is possible to have to be placed on dialysis and may have several hospital returns. There is a long list of complications but a transplant is the only option for any recovery.
