Together we can make a difference for Shun-Terria

I am writing to you on behalf of my daughter, Shun-Terria Russell. She is 15-years-old, and as an infant she was diagnosed with meningitis. Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. The inflammation may be caused by infection, viruses, bacteria or other microorganisms, and less commonly by certain drugs. Due to the extent of Shun-Terria’s illness, her disabilities include; cerebral palsy, developmental delay, diabetes mellitus (type 2), low vision impairment and a seizure disorder. She is feed through a gastronomy tube and is totally dependent on others for mobility, transfers, positioning and personal care.

My daughter is a very sweet and pleasant young lady who, despite all of the challenges, setbacks and obstacles she faces each day, works hard to reach her full potential in life. Shun-Terria attends the local school where she receives aquatic, occupational and physical therapy. With assistance, she is able to interact with classroom tools and participates in various community-based projects. Shun-Terria is a former Girl Scout and participates annually in the Special Olympics. Due to her age and level of disability, she is no longer able to participate in many family gatherings and activities.

Even with insurance, I face many uninsured illness-related expenses for my daughter such as the expense of a modified van which would allow the family to once again take Shun-Terria outside to experience and explore new adventures in life.

To help offset such an expense, a fundraising campaign in Shun-Terria’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for more than 30 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury or illness. All contributions are tax-deductible, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Atlantic Catastrophic Illness Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for illness-related expenses only.
