HOPE FOR SIMON

Simon Jamel is 49 years old and had been struggling with cirrhosis of the liver for a number of years. Last year, he came close to death while working in Texas. He was immediately sent by heliport to a specialty hospital where his doctors diagnosed him with cirrhosis due to a possible parasite.

Simon recently received his gift of life – a liver transplant and is on the road to recovery, but he still needs your help because medical bills continue to mount.

Simon was born in England, lived in Guyana, South America and came to the United States when he was 10 years old. I have known Simon since I was 15 years old. We eventually married and have two beautiful children together, Zachary and Raven (see the Photo Albums on this page). Though our marriage dissolved, we remain very close friends and continue to co-parent our children. He is an important part of our lives and has always been a dedicated, supportive and loving father.

As a truck driver, Simon has traveled along the East and West Coast of the United States and was acknowledged for having over 1,000,000 miles of safe driving that accumulated from various truck companies over the years.

But his dedication goes well beyond his family and job. Simon was a responder for 26 weeks in Louisiana when drivers were called to assist with rescue and debris cleanup from the devastating Hurricane Katrina, as well as a hurricane that struck Florida. Everyone who knows Simon knows that he has touched countless lives along the way. After many years of helping others, Simon is now the one who needs your help.

Even with insurance, the entire cost of the transplant is not covered (the average cost is over $600,000). He has many out-of-pocket expenses that include the hospital stay, post-op appointments and anti-rejection medications (needed for the rest of his life), insurance co-pays, and the monthly insurance premium.

To help with the financial burden of Simon’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted non-profit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. This April Simon will turn 50, and next year both of his children will be graduating: one from high school, one from college. If we all work together we can make Simon’s prospects for the future that much brighter.
