Skyler Comstock

Skyler Comstock is a 28 year old resident of New Sharon that has been living with a spinal cord injury since December 2022. Since that day in December, Skyler has been paralyzed from the neck down. Family provides the necessary 24/7 care and assistance Skyler requires to maintain health, comfort, enrichment, and survival. Although Skyler is faced with significant physical and mental oppositions every second of every day, he chooses to make those around him smile. He’s known to buy gifts “just because”, have temporary tattoos applied for his nurse to find, or be waiting in a scary mask for when someone flips the light on.Skyler recently got his personalized power wheelchair. Since receiving his chair, Skyler has been working hard at controlling it independently with his head and the little bit of movement that his has in his shoulder. Despite the odds, Skyler is hopeful for the future and advancements in spinal cord injury treatments. However, one thing that Skyler desperately needs now, that would significantly improve his life, is handicap accessible transportation. For almost 2 years, Skyler has not been able to leave his home accept for scheduled medical appointments.Skyler and his family need to be able to get out and go places together for fun and entertainment, but handicap accessible transportation is a necessity as well. There are times when Skyler needs urgent medical attention outside of the home, but his transportation service requires a 48 hour notice, so his care is delayed. Also, with handicap accessible transportation, Skyler could attend outpatient therapy programs that could possibly help him regain some control of his upper extremities. Not only is handicap accessibility transportation a necessity for Skyler’s health, but it would allow Skyler to give back to the community. Skyler would like to be able to tour area schools and speak out against drunk driving.Skyler’s injury creates numerous hurdles for him and his family, transportation should not be one of them.
