Stephen Needs Our Help!

Stephen John Nootens is a 34 year old man who is very ill. Stephen was born with a defect in his heart and has had more than 12 surgeries, the first the day after he was born. A heart transplant is now his only hope of survival and he is on the list to receive a heart within the next year.

Stephen is a very caring individual. He spent countless hours with his Grandmother during her lifetime and considered her among his best friends. Together they laughed over books and movies. He is an avid reader and quite the expert about films old and new, and the actors, directors and trivia regarding those films. He keeps up on current events and enjoys a healthy political debate. As a volunteer for 11 years at the local library, he has participated in writers groups and clubs. Although his vocal cords are paralyzed from past surgeries, he manages to speak softly and enjoys social interaction and laughter. When he’s not at the library, he visits his disabled Dad or spends time on the computer. He is a kind and friendly man who is committed to living a full life once he completes this transplant. His families’ goal is to see him enjoy a lifetime without further surgery or pain.

Transplants are life saving but financially draining. Even with insurance, Stephen is facing very high expenses including post-transplant medications of up to $1200 per month, cardiac rehab and 24 hour in home care during recovery. These costs are not covered under Stephen’s insurance plan.
