Taneeshya Sedminik

My name is Taneeshya Sedminik. I suffered a gunshot wound to the front of the throat resulting in a spinal cord injury on July 1, 2021. I was in the ICU for almost a month, where I also suffered from a stroke. It was difficult to see how the stroke affected my dexterity, speech or balance because I was still intubated at the time. I was fortunate enough to do rehab at Craig Nelson in Salt Lake City, however I was still handling so many medical issues that I don’t feel like I got everything I needed to succeed and progress in my independence.

I was living in Montana at the time of my injury. After I finished my rehab I returned to Montana to live with my mom in our family house. Due to the limited amount of resources, including doctors, physical therapists, and accessible gyms. After a few months I decided to move to Las Vegas with my sister Tahnni to improve my quality of life. Although I was able to regain some of my physical strength and abilities so far, I’d be lying if I said it was a smart move financially. I was not prepared for the costs of living in the city. Food prices, gas, vehicle insurance and healthcare quickly added up putting me in more debt than anyone let alone a 25 year old should accumulate.

I am lucky enough to make a good amount on social security disability, however I make more than the maximum amount from Medicaid. Not being able to be on Medicaid forced me to purchase private insurance. Without being on Medicaid, my sister, Tahnni, who is my sole caregiver is unable to receive compensation for such. I am not independent enough at this time to be left alone during the day which results in Tahnni having to work graveyard shifts. Even with doing so we are unable to make ends meet since I have so much out of pocket medical expenses.

I am working every day to regain my independence. I attend physical and occupational therapy twice a week. I go to the gym at least once a week and work out at home. In my free time, I like to color, care for my house plants, crochet and do my make up. I also enjoy being outside and enjoying the sunshine. I have a dog named Apollo. We like to take walks, cuddle and brush his coat.
