However, everything changed in April 2023 when he sought care from a team of specialists at Tampa General Hospital. Tom was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where he received a life-altering diagnosis: Pulmonary Hypertension. This chronic condition required him to rely on continuous oxygen therapy and potent medications around the clock. Despite trying various treatments in the hope of alleviating his condition, nothing has yielded significant improvement. Now, Tom’s journey has led him to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, where he has been referred for a life-saving lung transplant evaluation.

In May 2024, Tom faced a heartbreaking reality: his worsening breathing issues forced him to leave his job. Without his income, his family now depends solely on his wife’s salary to make ends meet. While their health insurance covers the majority of medical expenses, there remain critical costs—such as uncovered medications and other essentials—that are not included. Furthermore, during Tom’s recovery from the lung transplant, his wife will need to take a six-month leave from her job to care for him. Unfortunately, caregivers are not eligible for short-term disability benefits, leaving the family with no income during this period.
