In 1984, I was hit in my head by a batted softball. I developed a blood clot the size of a large apple and had surgery to remove it. I was comatose for three weeks and remained in the hospital for 11 weeks total. With time, I regained the ability to walk with a cane. Moving on down this trail known as life, I attended Mississippi State University, where I was active in Phi Mu Fraternity, was a Phi Gamma Delta Little Sister, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication, emphasizing Public Relations.

In 1998, I got married and we had two children. Unfortunately, we divorced in 2011. In 2013, I fell and broke my left hip, landing me in the hospital for 30 days, and establishing a new “normal” in my life. In 2017, my then-boyfriend (now husband) took me to Phoenix to see where he grew up. On the drive back, I became very seriously ill and was hospitalized in Oklahoma for five days, two of which were in ICU. I remained unwell and that Fall went to see a new neurologist. She soon diagnosed me with Critical Illness Neuropathy. In 2019, I wed my true love, the love of my life, Paul. By 2020, I was going to the ER a couple or so times a month and being admitted for days, even a week, at a time. By Spring of 2020, labs were done to confirm my neurologist’s suspicions that I had been exposed to West Nile Virus. The lab work was also positive for Lyme Disease and Babesia, a tic-borne parasite. I’ve been in a wheelchair, unable to walk since the trip to Phoenix. The effect of this is that some days I’m fine and able to transfer independently. But other days I’m terribly weak and rely on my husband to lift me to transfer. However, the worst effect is when I’m completely incoherent, lethargic, and dehydrated. Treatment for this is very expensive, as you might imagine. My insurance covers some of my cost but cost but not my Lyme disease treatments and some medications. Any assistance you can provide will be immensely appreciated. I would also welcome your prayers for me and my husband as we journey this path together.
