Ty’s Journey continues….

A few years ago my dear friend Darcie started a fundraising campaign for my son Ty, who was instantly paralyzed at the age of 8 due to a rare autoimmune disease called NMO(neuromyelitis optica).

We were fortunate to have raised funds that have paid for Ty’s last 2 years of PT! All of those funds have been used for the physical therapy that is essential for Ty. Now we find ourselves in the position of needing to start his fundraising campaign again so he can continue to go his physical therapy program. Until April 2018 he worked with Project Walk, but unfortunately they closed their doors. But we were were very fortunate to find a place in Denver called NeuAbility in April 2018.

NeuAbility’s main goal is to provide rehabilitative exercise alternatives to those living with spinal cord injuries. Their specialists provide a one-on-one exercise based program for Ty, focusing on his specific needs and goals to become more independent, stronger and more confident. His weekly PT sessions include riding the FES bike to prevent muscle atrophy, specific exercises to help with his scoliosis, standing and walking his legs on a treadmill.

One of his most amazing accomplishments so far this year has been him walking with a specific brace called a KAFO. This device stabilizes his knee and ankle so he can stand and take steps by swinging his legs while holding onto a walker!!! NeuAbility is more than an adaptive workout facility-it is a community that encourages, inspires, motivates and uplifts Ty on a weekly basis!!

Ty is now 15 and a sophomore in high school. He loves anything that involves the water-adaptive water skiing and scuba diving are two of his favorites. He has an amazing supportive community and family, including his 3 brothers, sister and 4 step-brothers. He dreams of going to college to pursue a degree in Marine Biology!!

Ty currently goes to NeuAbility 3 times a week. Unfortunately this program is not covered by insurance and we need to continue to fundraise so that Ty can continue to attend PT. He has made so many amazing accomplishments. Help him continue to move forward.
