After almost 2 years of struggling with a progressive interstitial lung disease, Billy is now recovering from a bilateral lung transplant at the Hospital of the University of Pennslyvania. The months ahead will be challenging in many ways, and donating to Help Hope Live is a way to support Billy and his family through the financial burden that accompanies such an impactful medical event.

In October of 2021, Billy was hospitalized for sudden respiratory distress. It was determined that he had developed a type of interstitial lung disease that caused inflammation and scarring of his lungs. He was eventually discharged from the hospital, requiring consistent home oxygen, steroid treatments, and additional respiratory supports. While his family was told that this was a progressive disease which could only be halted with a bilateral lung transplant, no one could be prepared for how quickly it escalated to that level.

This summer, Billy was hospitalized after contracting a minor respiratory illness. Unfortunately, this led to several weeks of being in and out of the hospital, often requiring significant medical intervention. After his final hospitalization, his family was told that his needs could no longer be met at home, and that he needed to stay in the hospital until his donor lungs became available.

On September 28th, Billy received the call that a donor match had been made, and he successfully underwent his lung transplant. He is currently in the ICU, recovering from this major surgery, but he is meeting every challenge with strength and determination. His family could not be prouder of him. Returning home to life with his wife and two little girls is driving his motivation to overcome every obstacle he faces.

While this major hurdle has been overcome, the challenges ahead are many. In addition to the physical and mental challenges, a lung transplant creates a financial burden. While Billy has health insurance, many lung transplant expenses are surprisingly not covered. In addition, Billy’s family will be responsible for the cost of frequent travel to the hospital for therapies, stays in transplant housing, and copays for a lifetime of anti-rejection mediations for his new lungs.

His family is reaching out for donations to Help Hope Live, which can help ease the financial burden of a transplant. This support will allow Billy to focus on making a healthy recovery and able to enjoy a long life ahead with his wife, Rachel, and their two little girls.
