William Portillo

Family and friends of William Portillo are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a Transplant. William has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

William Portillo is a 28-year-old man whose life took an unexpected turn when he received a life-changing diagnosis. In high school, he met the love of his life, his wife, and together they have a beautiful daughter who is the perfect mix of both of them—an endless source of joy and pride.

Everything changed for William on Wednesday, November 27th, 2024, just the day before Thanksgiving, when he received the devastating news from his doctor that he was facing kidney failure. A person who had always avoided medications, he now finds himself taking ten different pills a day, undergoing regular tests every five weeks, and attending doctor appointments every six weeks.

Though life has become more challenging since his diagnosis, William remains determined to push through for the sake of his family. He is a hardworking man who enjoys spending quality time with his wife and daughter, cherishing their moments together. However, his new reality comes with limitations. The strict diet he must follow is difficult to maintain while working long hours in construction, and socializing with friends and family has become harder due to his restrictions. Sleep is often elusive, as muscle cramps disrupt his rest throughout the night, and his physical job leaves him feeling exhausted even before the day begins. Fluid retention and other physical symptoms continue to challenge him daily, and activities like playing soccer have been put on hold due to the discomfort of sweating.

Despite these struggles, William is relentlessly hopeful.

 He is now fundraising for a kidney transplant and the associated costs of finding a living donor, with high hopes that a match will be found. He also anticipates potential setbacks or complications along the way, and is preparing for those challenges as best he can.

William’s greatest hope is that a kidney transplant will restore his health and energy, allowing him to be the vibrant father and husband he once was. He looks forward to spending more time with his family without being so fatigued, and dreams of returning to the soccer field—this time as a player, not a spectator.
