Never Give Up, Never Surrender!

Mid-August 2022, Robert was rushed to St. Louis University due to the Dr’s at Rolla Hospital finding a walnut size mass in his brain, and severe swelling. The swelling has caused Aphasia (memory loss, headache, and speech impairments.) Also, loss of motor skills and balance. After further testing at SLU hospital, the Neurologist made the decision to remove the mass. They were successful in removing 85%-95% of the mass. A biopsy of the mass would take about 3 weeks to determine.

Robert’s 9 days stay at SLU ended up with him moving in with his daughter-in-law. Due to his various restrictions, he has to give up his apartment in Rolla and his independence. Then giving up his 20 years as a head chef.

At the beginning of September (8th) the Wilder family received a devastating diagnosis. During his appointment to get the staples out from Robert’s head, he found out the mass was a Glioblastoma grade 4, brain tumor. For those that don’t know, it is the most aggressive brain cancer and fastest growing, there is no cure. The tumor returning is not a question of if but when. The next day a neurologist called Robert to give him the official news. The Dr. spoke with him about Glioblastoma 4, and other details about this, and told him he had about 14-18 months life expectancy. Treatment fo the cancer is 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. Further surgeries to remove the mass if it comes back. Also a waiting period every 3 months to test if any new mass has come back.

With this horrible diagnosis, Robert is not allowed to return to work. At this time, he is on a 90 unpaid leave of absence from his job, due to assist with insurance, but will be terminated. This will cause any future chemotherapy treatments, radiation therapy prescriptions, living expenses, etc to come out of his pocket without an income.

Part of this founding is also allowing Robert the opportunity to seek out newer treatments at places like Mayo, John Hopkins, Siteman, and many other treatment facilities. The process is long and worth the effort to assist others with his diagnosis and afford Robert a few more months with us.
