Woody Morgan

On Sunday, March 9, 2008, the lives of Woody Morgan and his family changed in an instant. Woody, a 6’5″, 200 lb. University of Georgia sophomore and stellar student, an excellent athlete and former captain of the Grady High School soccer team, an outgoing young man with a big smile, warm handshake, and engaging laugh, broke five vertebrae in his neck in a freak body surfing accident in the Gulf of Mexico.

After spending a week in intensive care in Pensacola, Woody was flown to Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta where he spent several months in recovery. His long-term prognosis is unknown, but he is currently paralyzed from the waist down with limited movement of his upper body and arms. Amazingly, despite the nature of his injuries, Woody has inspired everyone with his remarkably positive attitude and determined spirit. He is working long and exhausting hours in physical therapy with a goal of returning to UGA as soon as possible. We all believe he will make it back!

Many of us touched by Woody and the Morgans have asked ourselves “What can we do to help?”. After researching options, a group of us have established a fundraising campaign through HelpHOPELive (formerly NTAF) to help Woody’s family with their overwhelming expenses. HelpHOPELive is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that has been helping patients for nearly 30 years. HelpHOPELive estimates that the typical out-of-pocket medical expenses paid by the family for a patient with a spinal cord injury range from $150,000 to $550,000 in the first year alone. Donations to HelpHOPELive in Woody’s name are tax-deductible and will be available to the Morgans for Woody’s out-of-pocket accident related expenses not covered by medical insurance or federal assistance.
