Misfortunes do not come alone for the Romero family. In the summer of 2022, while attending a conference in North Carolina, a drunk driver crashed into Yamila’s wheelchair-accessible van.

Yamila’s mother, her greatest supporter, had been dealing with a spine infection but was able to fully recover from everything she had to face. Meanwhile, during that winter, Yamila had the flu and was treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

Yamila’s father had to leave his job to take care of Yamila and her mother, Haydee, for approximately three months. Her parents had to use their savings to support the family and pay off the credit for the wheelchair-accessible van, which continues to need repairs for other issues from the crash.

Her parents also spent money updating Yamila’s old wheelchair-accessible van so she could continue attending out-of-state medical appointments and classes at George Mason University.
