For over 20 years, I have been living with syringohydromyelia, a condition that has caused permanent paralysis. I can no longer walk, and this reality has completely changed my life. Despite the challenges, I have worked hard to remain independent, stay involved with my family, and continue working with the support of the Department of Aging and Rehabilitation Services.

For many years, our 2008 Honda Odyssey VMI handicapped-accessible van has been an incredible blessing to me and my family. It has given me mobility, freedom, and the ability to participate in everyday life — from medical appointments and work commitments to family outings and attending our place of worship together. Being able to go as a family means so much to us, and this van has made that possible.

However, the van is now showing its age. The wheelchair ramp is no longer working, and due to the van’s age, parts needed to repair the ramp system are no longer available. The driver-side sliding door also no longer functions, and the cost to repair it is simply too expensive, so we are unable to use that door at all. In addition, the van has very high mileage. At this point, it no longer makes financial sense to continue putting money into a vehicle that is clearly nearing the end of its lifespan.

This van has served us faithfully, but it is on its way out.

Without reliable transportation, my independence is at risk. A handicapped-accessible van is not just a vehicle for me — it is my lifeline. It allows me to get to work, attend medical appointments, worship with my family, and spend meaningful time with the people I love without having to rely completely on others.

I am raising $75,000 to purchase a newer, reliable handicapped-accessible van that will restore my mobility and allow me to continue living and working with dignity.
