Team Jack - The Ultimate Comeback

Meet Jack May

At 16 years old and a high school junior from Burlington, North Carolina, Jack has always stood out, not only as an exceptional student at the top of his class, but also as an extraordinarily talented athlete.

Jack’s favorite sport is baseball, and this past summer he played catcher, his favorite position, for the Orioles Scout baseball team out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Throughout his time with the Orioles, Jack competed at premier venues across the Southeast, including East Cobb and LakePoint in Georgia, showcasing his skills in front of college coaches and scouts. A dedicated and accomplished player, Jack earned a spot on his high school varsity baseball team at Western Alamance High School as a freshman and played in every game, a testament to both his talent and relentless work ethic.

A gifted multi-sport athlete, Jack also played basketball and football throughout his youth and was honored as Athlete of the Year in eighth grade, recognizing his dedication, versatility, leadership, and commitment both on and off the field.

On July 25, 2026, while attending a collegiate summer baseball league game, Jack’s life changed in an instant when he sustained a catastrophic traumatic spinal cord injury. Following emergency treatment and surgery, Jack was transferred to the renowned Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, one of the nation’s leading hospitals for spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Since then, he has been working tirelessly through intensive therapy and recovery programs, focusing each day on maximizing his recovery.

While the challenges he faces are immense, Jack has approached rehabilitation with the same fortitude, determination, grit, and competitive spirit that defined him as an athlete. Every day, he brings the same commitment to recovery that he once brought to early morning workouts, practices, games, and training sessions. Whether in the therapy gym, occupational therapy sessions, or rehabilitation exercises, Jack continues to push himself with the same relentless work ethic that helped him excel in sports. His perseverance inspires his family, friends, therapists, and everyone involved in his care.

Jack’s passion, skill, and leadership on the field are matched only by his character off the field. Known for his kindness, genuine warmth, positivity, and infectious smile, he has always been the kind of teammate and friend who makes everyone around him feel included and supported. Even in the face of unimaginable adversity, Jack continues to inspire those around him with his courage, resilience, and unwavering determination.
