Family and friends of Jerica Morrison are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a transplant. Jerica has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

At just 12 years old, Jerica’s life changed forever.

Growing up in Denver, Colorado, Jerica experienced an unimaginable loss when she came home from school to find that her mother had passed away. Suddenly, facing life without the only support system she knew, she moved to Laramie, Wyoming, to live with her father—someone she had only minimally known.

While trying to process deep, heavy grief and adjust to a completely new life, another life-altering challenge arrived just a few months later: Jerica was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

What followed was a moment of profound heartbreak and instability. While Jerica was still in the hospital, trying to cope with the loss of her mother and learning how to manage her new diagnosis, her father came to her hospital room. Instead of offering comfort, he told her he no longer wanted to care for her and was placing her in a group home.

Because of this, Jerica was sent to the Cathedral Home in Laramie, a facility funded and navigated by the system. As a young girl, she had to learn to live with a complex medical condition without the consistent family support she deserved. Eventually, she was welcomed into a foster family in Cheyenne who provided the care, compassion, and true sense of belonging she needed during some of her most difficult years.

Through it all, Jerica has never stopped fighting.

Today, her health challenges have become severe. As a brittle diabetic, she faces constant medical uncertainty and frequent hospitalizations. She has undergone double bypass surgery and now lives with gastroparesis, a painful digestive condition. She is currently awaiting a life-saving kidney and pancreas transplant.

Despite everything, Jerica worked hard to build a future for herself. She completed esthetician school and earned her license—an achievement she is incredibly proud of. Unfortunately, her declining health has recently made it impossible for her to continue working, leaving her with limited income and mounting medical expenses.

Jerica lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but must travel frequently to Denver for transplant testing, care, and procedures. When a donor is found, she will need to stay in Denver for approximately six weeks during recovery.

The financial burden is overwhelming. Expenses include:

• Travel to and from Denver for medical teams

• Temporary lodging during her six-week recovery period

• Food and daily living expenses while away from home

• Vital medications and transplant-related care

These costs are far beyond what Jerica can manage on her own while unable to work.
