Logan Hoyle

Logan is a 7 year old who lives with his parents and two older brothers. After surviving bacterial meningitis as a baby, he and his family navigate life with long-term complications including cerebral palsy (CP) and visual impairment. Logan is fortunate to have Medicaid coverage that provides him essential equipment including his wheelchair, stander, bath chair and AFOs; however, support does not extend to accessible transportation.

Now weighing in at 57 pounds, it is increasingly challenging to transfer Logan. His family has just bought a lift to use for indoor transfers. When we need to load into the van, dad does the ‘heavy lifting’, throwing Logan over a shoulder and putting him into his car seat.

However, mom occasionally needs to take Logan places when dad’s not available, Logan will keep getting bigger, and both Mom and Dad need to protect their backs for future use. The family of 5 also needs to be able to go places together.

Like all special-needs equipment, purchasing an accessible vehicle carries a premium. On top of the price of the vehicle, a conversion (cutting the frame to lower the floor, adding the ramp, seating, straps, and keeping all essential parts functioning) can cost $20-$25K.

Thankfully, Mom and Dad are pretty frugal and have been budgeting for this day for years. Even so, it’s a very significant purchase. In humility, they acknowledge that their family and friends may have the desire and means to help shoulder the burden with them. The family has found a used vehicle they’re excited to purchase (and has attached photos!) The ‘goal’ amount of $16.3K reflects the vehicle invoice line item for the value of the conversion and adaptive equipment.

They’ve partnered with the nonprofit Help Hope Live as it’s mission is to provide a platform for giving that covers uninsured medical expenses associated with a catastrophic illness. All donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.
