From the Pinnacle of Success to a Fight for Survival

For two decades, Mark Lindy has quietly poured his life into serving others. As a founding board member of the largest food mission in Central Virginia, he spent 20 years fighting hunger in his community. He continually provides biblical counseling free of charge to those in need and leads the Celebrate Recovery program at his local church, offering hope and healing to people battling addiction and trauma.

In March of 2026, Mark achieved another personal milestone, graduating with high honors with a doctorate in biblical counseling. He was ready to expand his lifelong mission of service. However, just one day after graduation the doctors called him, and his life was completely upended.

Mark was diagnosed with an intramedullary spinal ependymoma—a rare Grade 2 tumor lodged deep between the C3 and T2 vertebrae of his spinal cord. What was supposed to be a corrective surgical intervention quickly turned catastrophic.

The Medical Crisis

During an agonizing procedure that lasted twice as long as expected, surgeons faced extreme complexity, even having to fold his dura—the delicate outer membrane protecting the spinal cord—to access the mass. Intraoperative monitoring revealed that Mark lost 50% of the neurological signal connecting his brain to his limbs, and on the operating table, he clinically died before surgeons were able to revive him.

When Mark finally awoke, he was faced with severe, life-altering complications:

• Severe Paralysis: He woke up paralyzed from the neck down, losing all sensation in 80% of his body, along with a complete loss of proprioception (body awareness) and bowel control.

• Critical Blood Clots: He suffered four pulmonary embolisms in his lungs immediately post-surgery.

• Uncertain Prognosis: Because of the extreme rarity and precarious position of the tumor, surgeons were unable to confirm if the entire mass was removed, and there is no reliable long-term medical data to predict his outcome.

The Delicate Path Ahead:

Mark’s condition is a fragile race against time. Because of the location and previous scar tissue, any additional surgery carries a dangerously high risk of causing complete paralysis. Furthermore, without intervention, the ongoing wear and tear on his compromised spinal cord poses a constant threat of progressive, severe immobility over the coming years.

An Overwhelming Financial Strain

As Mark grappled with the physical reality of his condition, grief and financial crisis struck his home. On January 9, 2025, the biological father of Mark’s adopted children tragically died by suicide. Beyond the emotional trauma inflicted on his family, Mark was left with an overwhelming mountain of unexpected financial obligations and mounting medical bills.

A Faith That Will Not Waver: Mark’s Vision

Despite losing 80% of his body’s feeling and facing an uncertain future, Mark’s spirit remains completely intact. A man who spent 20 years feeding the hungry, counseling the broken for free, and guiding people through recovery is now facing his own darkest hour.

Mark’s ultimate goal is to relieve the crushing burden of his mortgage so his family remains secure while he navigates his health. With that financial stability in place, he intends to spend whatever time and strength he has left continuing his calling—preaching, counseling, and bringing the hope of the Gospel to a hurting world and hopes that he can live the rest of his life pastoring a church.
