The Hook: A Routine Surgery That Changed Everything

Fifteen years ago, Michelle walked into Methodist Hospital for a routine gallbladder removal. She expected to go home the next day and take just a few days off of work. Instead, she woke up to a reality that would shatter her world: she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C, advanced cirrhosis, and end-stage liver failure. Doctors gave her a devastating estimate of just 2 to 4 months to live.

They completely underestimated who they were dealing with.

The 15-Year Battle: Conquering the Impossible

For the next decade and a half, Michelle didn’t just fight for her life—she rewrote the medical rulebook. Her journey became a relentless marathon of survival.

Over those 15 years, she faced and completely conquered:

• Four separate bouts of liver cancer.

• A breast cancer diagnosis that cruelly disqualified her from being listed for a life-saving transplant for three agonizing years while she waited for clearance.

Through every single diagnosis, radiation treatment, and setback, Michelle maintained her wisdom, her grace, and her signature determination. She fought her way back to health, time and time again.

The Miraculous Turnaround at UNMC

By this past year, the years of fighting had taken their toll. Michelle was fading fast, and time was running out. But warriors don’t give up.

Through relentless advocacy, her daughter fought to get her back to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)—and what happened next was nothing short of divine timing.

• Friday: Michelle arrived at UNMC, weak but ready for the final stretch. Her baseline labs were drawn.

• Saturday: The labs resulted, and Michelle was officially placed on the active, high-priority transplant list.

• Tuesday Night: Just three days later, the phone rang. It was the life-changing call we had been praying 15 years to hear: a matching liver was available.

We have officially retired her old, battle-worn liver and welcomed her new, life-saving gift into her body.

The Mountain After the Miracle

While the transplant surgery at UNMC was a miraculous victory, a whole new marathon has just begun. Post-transplant life requires a complex, high-stakes regimen of anti-rejection medications, continuous clinic visits, and strict specialized nutrition goals. Michelle must remain local to her medical team in Omaha for mandatory post-operative housing before she can finally return home to Arizona. Between the cost of continuous travel, lodging, insurance copays, and the lifelong immunosuppressant medications she needs to keep her new liver healthy, the financial mountain is steep.
