Family and friends of Nichole Wollaston are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a transplant. Nichole has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

Hi, my name is Nichole. I’m 33 years old, and I’m working toward a kidney and pancreas transplant after living with Type 1 diabetes since I was 14. Asking for help has never come easily, but today I’m setting my pride aside because this transplant is my chance at a healthier future.

My life changed overnight with that diagnosis. While most teenagers were worried about school, sports, and spending time with friends, I was learning how to count carbohydrates, check my blood sugar, take insulin, and live with a disease that never takes a day off.

I never imagined that a diagnosis at 14 would one day lead me here. After years of doing everything I could to manage my diabetes, my kidneys are now failing, and I’m going through the transplant process with hope for a kidney and pancreas transplant.

My health eventually reached the point where I could no longer work, making this season especially difficult financially. Even through my own health challenges, I’ve continued helping care for my Papa because family has always meant everything to me.

I’ve always believed in working hard and taking care of the people I love. Now I’m finding myself in the unfamiliar position of needing to let others help take care of me.

I’ve also been blessed to find the love of my life. We’ve been dreaming about building a future together, and this transplant means the chance to make those dreams a reality.

My dream is simple—to feel well enough to enjoy the life I’ve worked so hard to build.

Transplant brings expenses that insurance doesn’t always cover. I’ll need to travel to and from the transplant center, stay nearby during recovery, and manage costs such as copays, deductibles, lodging, meals, transportation, parking, and other transplant-related expenses at a time when I’m already unable to work.

When the day comes that I receive the call that a kidney and pancreas are waiting for me, I want to be ready—not worrying about how we’ll afford everything that comes with it, but focused on the incredible gift of a second chance.
