John Robert Schmid

My name is Rob, and I recently turned 65. I have been blessed with an amazing life partner, Carmie, and two wonderful adult children. I have always tried to embrace all that life has to offer: traveling, cooking, attending live music and sporting events, and sharing those experiences with family and friends.

For much of the past 30 years, my job allowed me to travel across the country, but that often came at the cost of precious time with my wife and children. As that chapter of my life begins to wind down, Carmie and I had been looking forward to spending more time with the people we love and doing the things that bring us joy: attending Carolina Hurricanes games with my son, traveling to Chicago to see our daughter and son-in-law, and making new memories together.

Five years ago, I was diagnosed with COPD and emphysema. As the disease has progressed, everyday activities have become harder. Walking, helping around the house, and even leaving home now take tremendous effort. I can no longer do many of the things I love with the people I love.

My COPD is now end stage, and my doctors are recommending a double lung transplant. The transplant process will require a significant commitment of time, including preparation before surgery and recovery afterward. Carmie and I will need to leave our jobs earlier than we expected. Health and disability insurance will replace some of our lost income, but it will not cover all of the medical, living, and travel expenses we will face.

Asking for help does not come naturally to me. I have always tried to be someone my family and friends could rely on physically, emotionally, and financially. It is difficult to find myself on the other side, but I cannot make this journey alone.
