Sekou Gordon

Sekou is a 47-year-old husband, of a wonderfully supportive wife and father to two magnificent children, who works to support his family. On Sunday, January 4th of 2026, he walked into the ER and 24 hours later he was paralyzed from the waist down! Sekou was diagnosed with Gillian-Barre Syndrome (GB) & Transverse Myelitis Syndrome (TM), a spinal cord injury (SCI), which resulted in him becoming a T-12 paraplegic incomplete. Although recovery is possible, it will be years-long journey with numerous out-of-pocket expenses.

A loving husband and committed father, Sekou enjoys time spent with his family. From helping his wife with her gardening, assisting his children with their school work or taking a road trip with the family, Sekou is all about family time!

Since his SCI, Sekou has been challenged adapting to living life in a wheelchair.  Getting out of bed, getting dressed, navigating inside and outside the house are no longer simple tasks. Routine activities are complicated by the SCI injury and Sekou is learning new methods to perform everyday responsibilities and adjusting to the circumstances of his life.

Sekou is fundraising for medical costs and home modifications. Some of the medical bills are only partially covered by insurance, which means Sekou and his family must cover any remaining balance out-of-pocket that can range from $5,000 – $25,000. Home modifications such as wheelchair ramps and bathroom modifications, are not covered by insurance and could range from $20,000 – $40,000 to make the home wheelchair accessible.

 Sekou hopes to regain some independence if he is able to address his personal care needs himself by having wheelchair access to their bathroom. He looks forwards to getting back to work and contributing to the household by doing any tasks he can perform from the wheelchair. Sekou is hopeful of recovery through therapy given time and will continue to embrace all future changes and challenges with the support of his family, friends and community.
