Family and friends of Sol Sanchez are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a catastrophic illness. Sol Rico is a joyful and deeply loved three-year-old twin who has been fighting since his very first breath.

Sol and his twin brother, Cielo, were born at only 26 weeks after a high-risk pregnancy. At birth, Sol experienced a brain injury and spent the first five months of his life in the NICU. He was later diagnosed with periventricular leukomalacia, also known as PVL, a type of brain injury that affects the white matter of the brain. He has also been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and cortical visual impairment.

But Sol is so much more than his diagnoses.

He is a beloved son, twin brother, and bright light in our family. He has shown us what determination looks like through every hospital stay, seizure, therapy session, and new challenge. His strength has inspired an entire community to stand beside him and believe in what may still be possible.

Because of his brain injury, Sol is not yet able to sit independently for long periods, crawl, walk, or talk. His cerebral palsy affects his movement, muscle control, and ability to reach developmental milestones. His cortical visual impairment affects how his brain processes what he sees, and his history of epilepsy has created additional challenges and periods of regression.

While other children his age are running, playing, and talking with their siblings, Sol spends much of his time working toward the foundational skills required to do those things. His days include physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with standing practice, assisted movement, and other treatments intended to support his development.

Our family is fundraising to help cover eligible medical treatments, intensive therapies, specialized care, medical travel, lodging, and other related expenses that are not fully covered by insurance. We are currently pursuing advanced treatment intended to support Sol’s neurological development, along with the ongoing therapies he needs to build strength, communication, mobility, and greater independence.

These treatments and related travel expenses can cost tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. We are committed to doing everything within our power to support Sol, but we cannot do it alone.

Our greatest hope is to give Sol every possible opportunity to walk, talk, communicate his needs, explore the world, and play alongside his twin brother. We want him to experience as much independence, connection, and joy as possible. Every new skill, no matter how small it may seem to someone else, can change Sol’s daily life and open the door to another possibility.

We understand that no treatment can promise a specific outcome. What we can do is continue giving Sol access to care and opportunities that may help him reach his fullest potential.
