Family and friends of Sue Monaghan are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a transplant. Sue has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

I was diagnosed with Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency in 2024, after a lung collapse emergency. I have a genetic form of emphysema. I receive weekly infusions of Prolastin, to put the proteins I need back into my system. It takes 900 plasma donations a year just for my yearly meds. So I thank all those who donate blood❤️. The weekly infusion is not a cure, it simply slows down the progression of the disease. I am on five different nebulizer drugs multiple times a day. My pulmonary function tests have declined each year and my ability to do many of the normal daily tasks has declined significantly. My Doctor has informed me there is nothing more he can prescribe and we have two choices. We can discuss palliative care or a lung transplant. He feels I am a perfect candidate for a transplant. Sick enough to need it and healthy enough for recovery. I have been married over 40 years to my wonderful wife Brigit, our daughter Noelle and our son Jeff have given me 3 beautiful granddaughters who I want to see grow up. I currently run a local Bingo Hall that provides a method of crucial fundraising for 6 local nonprofit organizations and do a lot of charity work in our community. I am in no way ready to discuss palliative care, I still have way too much to do. I will begin the evaluation process at Mass General Brigham soon. The lung transplant cost and the cost of the life long needed medications after transplant are daunting. It’s hard for me to ask for help, but here I am doing hard things.
