Susan Marie Larmore

My name is Susie, and my grandson Kobe turns four this year. More than anything, I want to be there for it. Really there, not watching from a chair while I’m hooked up to a dialysis machine twelve hours a day.

I’m in my fifties. I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for most of my life, I’ve had two heart attacks in the last three years, and I’ve been on dialysis for almost six. People tell me I don’t look sick, but it’s not the outside that counts. Most days I feel worn down and, honestly, a little alone, spending my hours keeping everyone else’s life running normally while mine stays on hold.

I still get up and do what needs doing. I just don’t have the energy left over to enjoy the people I love the way I used to. My friends, my community, the relationships that once came so easily.

A kidney transplant would change all of that. I’d no longer spend half my day tied to a machine. I’d have the energy to actually do life with my beautiful daughter Mikayla and my adorable grandson Kobe, to be part of their days instead of watching them pass by.
