A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump that helps the heart circulate blood in individuals with advanced heart failure. An LVAD may be used while waiting for a heart transplant or as a long-term treatment option when a transplant is not possible. While this technology can improve quality of life, it can also create significant medical and financial challenges.

In this post, you’ll learn about common costs associated with LVAD therapy, which expenses may not be covered by insurance, and how to secure fundraising support through our nonprofit, Help Hope Live.

Estimated Costs of LVAD Care

LVAD therapy can involve substantial medical and related expenses before, during, and after implantation. Costs can vary greatly depending on the cost of the device, the cost of initial admission, and the cost of re-hospitalizations.

Research shows that the initial hospitalization for LVAD implantation can exceed $120,000 to $270,000, with costs varying based on the patient’s condition, length of stay, and whether complications occur during treatment.

Families typically experience a broad range of out-of-pocket expenses not covered by insurance, such as:

Some supportive services and related care needs may not be fully covered by insurance. In addition, living with LVAD requires ongoing monitoring, follow-up care, and maintenance, creating recurring financial needs for many individuals and families.

Does Insurance Cover LVAD Care?

Coverage for LVAD-related care depends on your insurance plan, provider network, and individual medical circumstances. While insurance often covers many aspects of implantation and medical treatment, it may not cover every expense associated with living with an LVAD.

Travel, temporary lodging, caregiver costs, lost wages, home support services, and certain medical supplies may require substantial out-of-pocket spending. Coverage limitations can vary widely based on your plan and location.

Securing Financial Support for LVAD Care

Our nonprofit provides personalized fundraising guidance to help cover eligible medical and related expenses, allowing patients and caregivers to focus more fully on health, recovery, and daily life.

Does Community-Based Fundraising Work?

"I'm so happy to have Help Hope Live as my fundraising resource. They've been amazing to work with and have made the fundraising aspect of the transplant process a lot less intimidating."

Elizabeth Barnett has been living with complex heart issues since she was born. When she was listed for a dual heart and liver transplant, Liz turned to Help Hope Live to fundraise for the extensive associated out-of-pocket expenses. She was told to anticipate six to nine months of medical relocation and hundreds per month for medications post-transplant. With personalized fundraising support from Help Hope Live, Elizabeth raised $14,000 in less than four months, and she received her transplant. Today, she is a Help Hope Live Ambassador.

"The support I've received from Help Hope Live has made fundraising an easy process to understand."

Gregory Hal Wright was diagnosed with heart failure in 2007. With help from Help Hope Live, Greg brought together his community to help with the associated costs, including through press coverage, online donations, and in-person fundraisers with his alma mater. By the time Greg received a successful heart transplant in February 2020, his campaign had surpassed $18,000 raised. Today, he is an Ambassador for Help Hope Live.

“My social worker recommended Help Hope Live for heart transplant fundraising. As soon as I connected with my Client Services Coordinator at Help Hope Live, I knew I had made the right choice. My transplant experience would have been vastly different if I had not found Help Hope Live.”

Linda Jara received a life-changing heart transplant in September 2016. A year prior, Linda began a medical fundraising campaign with Help Hope Live for the immense out-of-pocket expenses associated with a heart transplant. Successful fundraising initiatives have continued for more than a decade in Linda’s honor, including both in-person fundraisers and online fundraising around key national giving days like GivingTuesday. Today, she is an Ambassador for Help Hope Live.
