Karlene, Single Mom and D.C. Public Servant, Needs Pancreas and Kidney Transplant
Washington, D.C.—On Saturday, May 20, the D.C. community will come together for a cause at the Hope Travels Day of Movement fitness fundraiser at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center. Funds raised benefit the nonprofit Help Hope Live in honor of Karlene Ore-Klimpacher, a single mother of two and D.C. public servant who needs a transplant.
Fundraiser Details
When: Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Turkey Thicket Recreation Center (1100 Michigan Avenue NE, Washington, D.C. 20017)
What: Hope Travels: A Day of Movement! Three ways to participate:
- Become a Team Captain and challenge friends and family to walk the track. Collect sponsorships at $10 per lap!
- Don’t want to walk? Stay on the couch and sponsor someone else to walk the track instead!
- Make a $10 donation and participate in a Go-Go Fitness Class onsite! Arrive between 9:45 a.m. and 9:55 a.m., class runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Other Features and Sponsors:
- 10-, 15-, or 20-minute massages from Versatile Touch
- Workout demo from WeFitDC from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Healthy vendors, including natural products, smoothies, and healthy food demos!
Cost: Sign up as a Walkathon Team Captain for $15. Donate $10 to participate in the fitness class. Pledge $10 per lap as a sponsor or Walkathon participant. Attend without participating in the fitness class or Walkathon for just $5. Sponsor a Walkathon team for $100!

Client’s Story
Karlene needs a pancreas and kidney transplant to live a healthy life. She has devoted all her time and energy to her family: now, her loved ones and her D.C. community are rallying to provide her with hope and financial help in her time of need through a transplant fundraising campaign with the national nonprofit Help Hope Live.
A diabetes diagnosis has created a severe strain on Karlene’s body. A double organ transplant is now her only hope for a healthy future. Over the years, Karlene has strived to stay positive and productive despite the debilitating physical and emotional impact of her medical issues.
Karlene is a public servant and a single mother of two, Felicia and Karson. “They are my world,” she explained. “I am so proud of the people they are growing into.” Karlene’s husband suddenly left the family in 2017, leaving Karlene overwhelmed in the midst of her health crisis. She called on her faith and personal resilience to get through the challenges, and today, she’s been able to watch one of her children depart for college.
Over the years, Karlene has faced a significant financial burden associated with her diagnosis and running a single-parent household. A kidney/pancreas transplant can come with an additional financial weight, even with insurance. Post-transplant, Karlene will need to take extremely expensive anti-rejection medications for a lifetime. These medications alone will likely top $5,000 per month.

So far, her generous community has raised over $19,500 to assist with the transplant journey.
Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and all funds raised will be managed by the nonprofit to cover verified medical and related expenses. Help Hope Live verifies medical and financial need for every patient.
