Albuquerque woman seeks more accessible future for kids and herself

Toña Rivera

“A van would allow me to continue doing my best work in helping my community.”

Toña Rivera is an artist living with cerebral palsy who uses a wheelchair and a communication device to connect with her community. She founded Every Ability Plays Project in 2014 to allow kids with disabilities to feel welcome and included in their community playgrounds through specialized adaptive equipment.

While giving back abundantly to her community, Toña fundraises with Help Hope Live to meet a critical need of her own: an accessible van. Accessible public transportation can be unreliable or unavailable, which leaves Toña unable to access and contribute to her community consistently.

Saving up for a vehicle on her own is impossible: to continue qualifying for SSI, she must have less than $2,000 in personal financial resources – and a van will cost over $45,000.

That’s why choosing to fundraise with Help Hope Live is an essential part of the plan for Toña.

“It’s been great having an organization like Help Hope Live support me in my efforts to fundraise for a van.”
