Cheryl Lute is very ill and needs our help. After years of struggling with pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension, a double lung transplant is her only hope for survival. She is on the active transplant waiting list with The Cleveland Clinic and is due to have the surgery in the coming months. Cheryl is one of the kindest and most giving people you will ever meet.
*Update – Cheryl had the transplant on December 22 and is currently recovering in the ICU.
Cheryl has lived in Piketon her entire life and is married to her high school sweetheart, Bill. Together, they raised their only child, Mindy, who is married to Chris Williamson. Cheryl has two young grandchildren, Caiden and Hadlee, who are the centers of her life. She worked as a nursing assistant for 28 years — most of that time at Traditions of Bristol Village. Cheryl’s poor health forced her into early retirement at 49, and today she is on continuous high levels of oxygen and struggles with the common activities of daily living. Cheryl and Bill are members of the Waverly Baptist Temple and are excited about this opportunity that God has provided for them. Cheryl and her family look forward to the day when she can breathe on her own and enjoy life’s little moments with her family and friends. They want to thank everyone for their continued prayers.
Transplants are lifesaving but financially draining. Even with insurance, Cheryl will have many uninsured-transplant related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, travel and at least three months of temporary relocation housing for herself and a caregiver and the costly anti-rejection medications that she will need to take for the rest of her life (approximately $1200 a month).
To help with the financial burden of Cheryl’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Great Lakes Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider making an end-of-year tax-deductible donation today

Thank you for your support and generosity. We know with God, all things are possible. Keep an eye on this campaign page as we will be posting regular updates.
Sincerely from the bottom of our hearts,
Cheryl’s family
Cheryl is currently in the hospital again in Cleveland with some complications from COVID and an infection in her kidney and gall bladder. Bill is currently staying in the hotel during most of the week.
Cheryl is doing great and is at home recovering. However, they are still financially strained due to the cost of medications. They could use any help possible. Thank you!
Cheryl has made great progress over the last month. She is currently in a step-down unit and is due to have the trach removed this week. She is eating solid foods, walking a few steps per day and doing a lot of rehab to regain her strength. The family has began preparations for her transfer home which could be as early as April!
Cheryl had a set back yesterday afternoon. She was doing really well and had the vent removed and was talking earlier in the day but had a shift in fluids around her lungs that put her in critical condition. The doctors have stabilized her and said that we are all very lucky that she is still with us. They are going to keep her sedated through the next couple days and be very aggressive in trying to keep the fluid off so this won't happen again.
The last couple days have been mostly two steps forward followed by one step back. She has had some setbacks but today they hope to finally remove the ventilator. Bill said that this is those most active and alert she has been. Praying for stabilization!
12 hours later she is back in the icu recovering! She lost a lot of blood as they had some issues with bleeding but things are looking good now. She is great hands and everyone is ready for the long road ahead of us. We will get to see her in about 30 minutes and then are headed to the hotel to rest for another long day tomorrow. She won't be awake until tomorrow. Thanks so much for everyone thoughts and prayers. We appreciate and love everyone so much.
Cheryl is in surgery as of 9:30 this morning. We expect her to be out early afternoon!
Great news for Cheryl. We have been notified that a set of donor lungs are available and the surgery will begin early this morning. Please keep our family and the family of the donors in your thoughts and prayers! Thank you lord!
