My loving husband, Lane, was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease 16 months ago. This disease has since progressed to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), which means without a kidney transplant he will not survive. Lane is currently on dialysis three days a week and has completed all transplant evaluations. He is on the active transplant list and we have been told the transplant could take place in as little as six months.
Lane and I have been married for more than 33 years. Prior to his diagnosis, Lane was always on the go — enjoying life riding his Harley, playing poker with his friends and spending time with family. After 11 years, he is no longer able to work at the job he loved at the Elkhart County Sheriff’s department. Once he is transplanted he is hoping to be able to return to work.
During the last six months Lane has been in and out of the hospital numerous times — I think to-date we have had 17 visits/stays either to the ER or the actual hospital. This disease has been both mentally and physically challenging as Lane’s muscles have atrophied to the point he now uses a walker — however, Lane is a fighter and is not giving up.
Even with insurance Lane has, and will continue to have, many uninsured transplant-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, frequent doctor visits and blood work, dialysis treatments, not to mention our portion of the actual transplant surgery and costly anti-rejection medications Lane will need to take for the rest of his life. While it is hard to ask for financial help, we have exhausted our savings and desperately need your support.
To help offset such expenses, a fundraising campaign in Lane’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Great Lakes Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. If you would like to make a contribution, please click the DONATE NOW bar.
If you are able to make a donation, no matter the size, we will be so grateful. I, along with Lane’s sisters, brothers, his mother and other family members, want my loving husband around for at least another 32 years. Please help us to help him. If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please keep him in your prayers and share this letter with others. Special thanks to Mark, Lane’s brother for helping put this together. God Bless.
