On March 13, 2016, Denny, 24, was a passenger in bad car accident resulting in a cervical spinal cord injury – the most serious of these injuries. Although we are uncertain of his prognosis, he and my family know he has a long road to recovery ahead.
Denny continues to fight and we have high hopes for his recovery however, an enormous amount of care will be needed. Our family must make home modifications that will range anywhere from $5,000 – $15,000 depending on his specific needs. In the first year alone, we expect physical rehabilitation therapy to cost Denny $21,000 – $38,000, and expect medical supplies to cost up to $3,500. The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) shows the estimated lifetime costs due to spinal cord injury can range from $1.5 million to over $4.5 million for a 25 year old with an injury like Denny’s.
Despite how overwhelming this all is, Denny still offers a big bright smile to his visitors and maintains a very positive attitude. He has remained steadfast, determined and most importantly, strong through all of this; frankly, he is inspiring. While he is clearly the strongest of us all, we want to make sure he knows his family and friends are here to carry him through this, which is why we are reaching out for support now.
Denny has chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive in part because HelpHOPELive assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Denny is doing great through his first week of rehabilitation! Looking better every day and has full support of his friends and family.
Denny is now out of the ICU and starting to work through his rehabilitation therapy. Please everyone, feel free to post messages of support. I know he will be happy to read them and know how much we all care about him. I will share the messages when I see him. He is staying strong and determined!
Today is three weeks to the day since the accident. Denny is still in the ICU fighting through his recovery. He still greets me with a big smile when I walk in to visit him. He is amazing and has been so involved in his care. He is pushing himself (and the nurses, and the doctors) to hurry up and get him out of the ICU!

I'm so glad Denny was able to obtain a van that will get him to and from therapy. Waiting on medicare supported transport services can derail ones entire treatment plan! Thank you so much to all of those who continued to support Denny through this and please keep posting messages for Denny to read. He continues to improve and knowing him, he wont give up until he's exactly where he wants to be with his recovery. We are all here for you Denny, and always will be!
