Thanks for your support!
We have been holding off on all negative updates..the transplant and complications were sooo hard that it's been over 3 months and she's just now NOT feeling awful. It was so touch and go, it was scary. Now her function and counts are improving so we again have hope she will have some normalcy soon.Thank you for the wonderful support, she couldn't have done it without all of you!
What a hard journey. Dad is recovering slowly from donating his kidney in exchange for a kidney for Mandy. She is having a harder time snapping back from this surgery and adjusting to all of the meds. Her kidney is working though and we expect to see some improvement to her health weekly.Yay that the dialysis machine was picked up from our home this week. Thanks for all the kind support.
Mandy's been on a new home hemo called nxstage since Nov and doing better than in clinic. This week we got confirmation that the exchange program found an O donor for her! So on 4/28, dad will give up his A kidney for a recipient in KS and their O donor will have their kidney removed and sent here to her. Just in time since her cardiac cath school program starts in July in Lancaster!
Thank you all for the kind words and support! Mandy's had several calls for deceased kidneys but only as backup and they've gone to the primary so it's very hard to be positive. Both mom and dad are approved to trade for her blood type too so we are hoping she can get on with life soon.
Bad news today...Mandy's donor was declined due to health issues. She's still not tolerating dialysis well so it's time for her to go on the list for deceased donors (these kidneys do not last nearly as long as those coming from a live donor). If anyone can help, Lehigh Valley Hospital - transplant office is still willing to test people of ANY blood type as the hospital now participates in the "shared donor program."
Mandy came home at the end of last week and has slowly been making strides in recovery. Her hemoglobin was dangerously low but is now rising. The renal diet and fluid restriction is a challenge but together we can survive it. Keeping the eye on the prize...we appreciate all prayers and wishes!
Wow, thanks again for all the supporting comments that make her smile! Her kidneys were removed on Thurs and they were so large and infected she lost 10 lbs. Her difficult recovery at LVH is progressing so she should be home next week.
Thank you for all of the supporting comments! Mandy's a tough cookie but every bit of support helps her to keep going. She has started dialysis this week as recommended for stabilization before surgery next week and in her words, "it sucks!" She is there every day and it takes all afternoon and since nurses and personnel say and do things a little differently each time, it has us spinning! Then she really has to come home and recover so it's a bummer. Hopefully, this will be just another hard step on the way to some normalcy in a few months. Since she's been failing since birth, we are ready for things to get easier for her.
In December, Mandy graduated from Bloomsburg University with a BS in Exercise Science and an minor in ASL. She is ready to take the next step to continue her life journey by having her kidneys removed in February so her system can be cleansed through dialysis in order for her body to be ready for a transplant from a friend this summer.
