Make a Difference in Nancy’s Life
Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you already know, brave, loving 62-year-young Nancy (pictured above with her grandchildren who she lives for) has overcome many healthcare obstacles since her liver disease diagnosis almost 13 years ago.
In May 2008, Nancy had a successful liver transplant. Within that first week, she suffered several small strokes, yet she was determined to persevere. After a few tough months of rehabilitation, Nancy was on her way. She had a healthy liver, and a second chance.
Spring of 2010 proved to be a struggle. Nancy was diagnosed with end stage renal disease. It was time to start the fight again…Nancy needed a kidney transplant, and she needed one fast! We looked to family and friends, but found no matches. In the fall of 2010, Nancy began dialysis three days a week. It zaps her energy but she sees it as her job and bears it with grace along with the other health challenges related to end stage renal failure that she is forced to endure.
Nancy now has a kidney donor willing to give her the gift of life! Sandra is amazing and proof that people can make a difference. Yet, there are more obstacles. Sandra is not a perfect match. Nancy and Sandra will need to be transplanted at a hospital that performs pairings (where Sandra’s kidney would go to one person, and that person’s volunteer donor would give a kidney to Nancy). This procedure could be at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where she’s listed, or Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where she recently went to begin the listing process.
Nancy is on Medicare, which is a blessing, but this will not cover all the costs for the transplant. Transplants are extremely expensive, and costs can be devastating. Even though her insurance company will cover most of the procedure, there are payments for hospital visits, clinics, vital desensitization procedures, travel expenses and medications needed for the rest of her life.
To help reduce this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Nancy’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. All contributions are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. You can help make a difference in Nancy’s life. Please, if you can, make a donation today.Together we can make a difference! Please help Nancy during this difficult time. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
