Katherine has devoted her life to caring and helping others. She has raised two loving and successful children and took in and cared for her mother in law before she passed away in 2012. Katherine has worked the past 15 years at Summit Academy, a charter school that specializes in educating children with special needs. She has been an active member of her church and community participating in countless outreaches for those in need and the homeless.
Katherine and her family are grateful for the opportunity for her to receive this life-saving transplant. However, while lifesaving, transplants are also financially draining. Even with insurance, Katherine, her family, and caregivers will be facing high out of pocket expenses. Some out of pocket expenses include relocation (short-term housing, food, transportation) for Katherine and her caregivers to Chapel Hill to be close to the hospital and doctors for post-transplant care. She will also incur out of pocket expenses for medications of up to $1400 a month, copays, and lab fees.
To help offset such expenses, a fundraising campaign in Katherine’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. If you would like to make a contribution, please click the DONATE NOW bar.
Your support is critical to the success of Katherine’s lifesaving transplant. Please know that every contribution counts. On behalf of family and all who are helping to support for Katherine during this time- we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This battle cannot be won alone and we are humbled by your support. Thank you for joining us to help Katherine enjoy many years of loving and living life!
Thank you,

Katherine’s daughter-in-law
I have a large extended family. My Grandma Grace (bawbaw) as we called her had 6 children. Those 6 children also had big families. So I had many cousins to play with growing up. Yes it is right, your cousins are your very first and bestest friends. :-) She had a hard life growing up in West Virginia. My Grandfather Joe (Daddy Joe) worked in the coal mines and they raised 6 good kids.
Along the way my Bawbaw put into each of us cousins a seed. The seed of love that God had for each one of us. For us that seed has grown and matured. We are still growing still learning. The best thing about this is, on those nights when you are down and lonely - you know there is someone right there with you holding you, loving you. Jesus Christ.
My son and daughter in law had moved to North Carolina a few months before all this happened. They had been asking me to come and stay with them. My insurance said we have two centers near your son Duke University and the University Hospital at North Carolina. You see how the puzzles of life fall into place with perfect timing. That's GOD.
Hello All - first of all thank you so much for visiting my page.
I thought I would start entering a little about my journey and how I ended up here in North Carolina.
I am struggled with COPD/Emphysema for so long it has almost become a way of life. In March 2016 I changed my pulmonary doctor. He sents me to the hospital to have test run to see where I was physically. My next appointment with him was one of shock, disbelief and yes a little anger. He told me he was referring me to hospital for possible lung transplant. I arrived home in shock and I just sat trying to wrap my head around those words "lung transplant". I called my sister and told her. We both started sobbing on the phone at the same time. I went into a black hole in my mind.
Then I started remembering what my God says about our struggles and I remembered what His Son did for us.
My children and family rallied around me. I am a truly blessed person. God has given me such blessings.
My insurance thru my employer would not pay for lung transplant in any hospital in Ohio. They gave me a list of 28 "centers of excellence" (their words) they would cover lung transplants. So with that in mind I started crying because I had confirmation from God. He had this journey all planned from the beginning.
