My wife, Carol Anderson, is just 57 years old and needs a lifesaving kidney transplant to survive. She suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Alport syndrome. This illness is characterized by progressive kidney disease and abnormalities of the ears and eyes. Because of its heredity nature, family members have been eliminated as potential kidney donors. Though this is the case, Carol is currently seeking a living donor match. Currently, she is on the kidney transplant waiting list at UNC.
Carol grew up in Morganton as did I. We have a son, Travis and two wonderful grandchildren, Lawson who is 12 years old and Alison who is 9. Carol and I loves spending time with them, camping and hiking and sitting around the fire pit making s’mores with them. Basically, anything outdoors. But now with kidney disease, Carol is unable to be as active and she desperately misses those special moments. Carol is a kind and generous person who is always helping others. This time she needs your help.
If Carol does not receive a new kidney soon, she will have to start dialysis. The longer Carol waits, the more the medical bills pile up, many of which are not covered by insurance. Some of those costs include travel to and from the medical center, co-pays for the many doctors’ fees and lab work, and anti-rejection medications once she receives her new kidney. The medicine alone will cost more than $2000 a month out-of-pocket for several months. She will have to continue to take many of these costly immunosuppressants for the rest of her life. Carol’s family is very committed to helping her with this struggle but she needs your help too.
To help with the financial burden of Carol’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.

Carol’s older brother Randy was only 50 years old when he was diagnosed with the same disease. He died two years later. We pray for a very different outcome for Carol where she is healthy again, camping, hiking and making s’mores again. Please know that any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your prayers, support and generosity.
Sincerely,
Alex Anderson (Carol’s husband)

I am getting very close to starting dialysis. I hope my prayers will be answered and receive a kidney soon. I also want to thank everyone who has prayed for me and helped in the past.
Just an update, the Donor I had did not work out and am still looking for a compatible donor. Thanks for all the donations I have received. At this time I am still on the transplant list and waiting for a Kidney. Thanks for all your prayers and any help that you have given.
I am now on the transplant list as of 03/24/2017. I also may have a donor, we will know for sure next month. We are hoping to have a BBQ Fundraiser soon. I have had several churches in my area to have fundraisers for me, so grateful for all the support from my family and community. I would like to mention my cousin Joyce Short and her husband Gayle, she is like a sister to me. They have been responsible for organizing and raising funds on my behalf. The breakfast, lunch, and spaghetti dinner that was at a several churches raise $1788.25.
I'm looking forward to 2017 pray that I raise the funds needed for my transplant and medication. I will be at UNC on the 23rd for more testing and will be going back in February. I hope that everything will go well and I get a transplant soon.
I will be having my stiches taken out on Friday from fistula surgery, I hope I never have to use it. It will be a blessing when I get a donor. My husband and I are looking forward to spending time with our son and grandchildren at Christmas.
Praying for you and a kidney real soon !
