Hey Andre!

This is Paul Flint, from your Bechtel days. Remember me? What was that, 83?
You were a great mentor to me and I have thought about you many times over the years. Just today I was remembering your note book, which you kept all your newly acquired tech knowledge in, a little tip that that has served me well over the years. I thought about that today, and thought to give it another try to find you online.

I remember watching you drain the capacitor on the UPS with a soldering iron, while the telecom execs stood looking over your shoulder in awe. I think you said that was something you learned at Southern Pacific Railroad (or some railroad).
I also remember your story about going to electronics school and working at SPR over the summer, afterwhich they offered you a job. And you started working there instead of going back to school because \"I\'m going to school to get the job, and now I have the job, why go back to school?\"

I looked for you on the internet many years ago, but could not find anything on the web at that time. Today was a different story.

The real kicker is not that I did well in telecoms, bought a condo with my sister at 23, and then decided it was stupid to have a mortgage at my age. The jacuzzi and free international phone calls were nice, but was I ready to be an old guy and settle down? Naw. I need to do crazy shit now, so I won\'t regret it later.
So I gave my interest in the house to my sister, quit my job, and joined a cult. That was educational.
But that isn\'t the kicker.
I quit the cult and married a Japanese doctor, and moved to Japan in 1992 . Life was good; I started a translation company; we travelled the world; but we never had any kids. She was older by 6 years, and she was kind of done with marriage, so I got divorced after 17 years, married a women 12 years younger, and now have 3 big boys.
But that isn\'t the kicker.
Here is the kicker: I got a kidney transplant in October of last year. I joined your club!

My family has a genetic thing that attacks the kidneys. It\'s called PKD It goes back as far as there are records. It doesn\'t get everyone. Me and my younger sister have it, but the other two don\'t. My kidneys started failing about 3 years go. My older sister knew this day was coming, and she had two good kidneys, so she stepped up immediately. After 2 years of hunting for hospitals in Japan that would do the operation during the pandemic, we finally landed one, and it took another year of preparations to set it up. I was days away from total failure when I got the operation.
It\'s been surreal, the difference between before and after.

I\'m on a ton of meds, but it\'s no biggie. I\'m sure you are too. Oh, I also had a blocked coronary artery in 2015, so I have 3 stents in my heart. That surgery was crazy. Awake the whole time. It looked like a video game that the doctor was playing, running a wire up my arm and into the heart.

In any case, I\'m glad to see that you are alive and kicking with a beautiful wife and loving family. Sorry for the rambling.
