Barbara grew up and currently lives on Long Island with her family. After working for many years at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Barbara retired to help care for her ill husband. Any free time that Barbara had was spent with her children and grandchildren enjoying life. Shortly after retiring, Barbara was diagnosed and had a rapid health decrease. As everyone around her could see her struggling more and more with daily activities, Barbara kept fighting to not let this slow her down until she no longer could. Barbara was put on 24/7 in home oxygen in June of 2016. On December 23, 2016 Barbara was placed on the Lung Transplant waiting list and to date has had two calls for possible donor lungs that unfortunately did not work out for her. She is keeping her spirits high and looks forward to her life post-transplant.
Transplants are an amazing option for some and a lifesaving treatment but are very expensive and financially draining. Of course, insurance helps the cost but there are many uncovered expenses that mount quickly such as post-transplant medications and copays, deductibles, frequent clinic visits, travel and temporary lodging expenses for Barbara and a caregiver to be close to the hospital for 4-6 months post-transplant
To help with the financial burden of Barbara Schnappauf’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community- based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the New York Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.
Thank you all for your prayers, support and generosity.
On behalf of Barbara’s team,
Rebecca
Hi to All:
As most of you know I am now home. Actually for 2 weeks now. Everything is going pretty good. So grateful for my new lung and being able to breath without oxygen. It was a rocky road for 4 months of being in the hospital. I can't find words to express how lucky I am and to thank my donor family and medical team. Everyone every step of the way was just outstanding.
Forever
Barbara
