Jewel Miller is a young woman who is very ill. After years of struggling with liver disease, a liver transplant is her only hope for survival. Jewel is one of the kindest person you’d ever hope to meet, always willing to lend a helping hand. Now she needs the support of her community as the cost of a transplant can be overwhelming.
Jewel grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated in 1982. Playing with her brother she put her arm through a glass storm door, but that did not stop her from accomplishing anything that she wanted to do. It made her that much stronger and more determined. Today she demonstrates that same courage and drive as she prepares for transplantation. Together, Jewel and her family are committed to seeing her through this procedure. However, they face a challenge they cannot meet alone.
As you can imagine, transplants are life-saving but financially draining. Even with insurance, Jewel is facing very high expenses including post-transplant medications of up to $1,500 a month, co-pays, lab fees, and more.
To help with the financial burden of Jewel’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community -based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Mid-Atlantic Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.

Well this month has been hell. On Thursday May 5 Jewel's umbilical hernia pop causing the fluid in her stomach to spray out like a fire hydrant. I rushed her to Franklin Square Hospital to have her transferred to John Hopkins so that her surgeon could handle this problem but instead Franklin Square emitted her to their Hospital instead of transferring her. They kept her for over eight days while the umbilical hernia leak this protein fluid out of her stomach I would never go to this Hospital again because their staff does not listen to what family members tell them finally was transferred to John Hopkins where they repaired the hernia and stopped the fluid from coming out. She still in the hospital recovering hopefully she'll come home this weekend which will be May 20th. Hopefully we are over one hurdle of getting her better her doctor said that she would be placed on the list of liver transplant. Now the waiting begins
Well here we go again. This month is nothing but running to John Hopkins for more test. She has to have her belly tapped again, they say every 4-6 weeks. Then more blood work, breast exam and female exam. Lord every month it's more of the same thing.
I have been trying to get money by selling what I can but it's nowhere what we need. I get a small amount from retirement and social security just to try to pay for gas running place to place. I never had to plead to people for money but I am now. PLEASE HELP!!! God love you all for what ever you can give. Tammy

It's gettin it's really hard and wears me out easily even in wheelchair but friend building up muscles lol Is hard to do much no energy even typin this I have drop down on my Facebook interaction but am sure they understand my best is hittin a like and post not goin to lie this is really hard it plays with your mind luckily I'll get a good cry and then I'm good it's just hard on the mind and thoughts good thing I've always have a warp mind and still laugh at myself
This month has been very busy. She had to have her stomach drained due to fluids built up. This is very painful. They were able to take off 8 milliliters of fluid which they told us was about 14 pounds. We found out that she will have to have this done every 6 weeks since her body can not do it itself. We have been running to John Hopkins for blood work, scans, x-ray and so on but she keeps a smile on her face and jokes with the technician's.
Jewel is a very kind loving soul who will, and has gone out of her way to help anyone or anything. She is a very compassionate person, and very spiritual. Jewel is a bit shy till she gets to know you, and when she says she'll be there to lend a helping hand, trust she will. Jewel likes smiles and hugs - the simple things in life mean the most. If you see her, be sure to stop and give her a hug. So let's give her a helping hand in return.
