Scott Phillips (51) is a loving husband and father of six. Scott was diagnosed with type 1 insulin dependent diabetes at the age of 12. After nearly 40 years as a diabetic the disease has taken its toll. Scott is currently in stage 5 kidney failure and his doctor hopes Scott will receive the transplant before the need for dialysis. Scott is on the waiting list for a kidney pancreas transplant which not only will give him a new kidney, but he will no longer be a diabetic!
Scott grew up in Geneva, IL, and graduated from Geneva Community H.S. He attended Colorado Mountain College and received an A.A.S. degree in photography. Scott has been active in ministry and mission work since his graduation, traveling around the world to help and support others. Scott and Patti married in 1992 and have six children including three siblings who were adopted from India in 2006. Scott is excited for this transplant so he can watch his already large family grow and change through marriage and grandchildren.
After many years of helping others, Scott is now the one who needs our help. Even with insurance there are many expenses that must be covered out of pocket. Some of these are co-pays, deductibles, travel to the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and relocation for two months at the time of transplant. In addition, Scott will be on a life-time of anti-rejection medications and will have to travel back to Phoenix for follow-up appointments. This is where your help is needed.
To help with the financial burden of Scott’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Midwest/West Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.

On behalf of Scott, Patti and our families, thank you for your prayers, support, and generosity. If we all work together we can make Scott’s prospect for the future much brighter.

Hello again from (very hot) Phoenix. Things are looking a little better. After receiving 4 blood plasma treatments replacing most of my plasma with donor plasma, the doctors are encouraged with a trend to the positive. They are not sure if this is due to the new kidney function or still the old kidneys. Regardless I am feeling much better, am able to get around some and even eat some real food! No treatments planned for the weekend and the doctors will reassess on Monday. Hopefully there will be indications by then that the new kidney is functioning and will continue to improve. For now I will remain in the hospital, with hopes to possibly to be released next week.
Good evening from Phoenix. A lot has happened since my last post. A lot of ups and downs. After the surgery to remove the pancreas, things did not improve as hoped with the kidney. I have received 4 units of blood, 3 rounds of dialysis, and 2 fresh frozen plasma treatments. The doctors are hoping this will help the new kidney to start functioning well. Today has been a good day. I have been able to walk a couple of times and have even eaten a little. The doctors are cautiously optimistic that things are improving. Once again thank you to everyone for your prayers and support it means so much to me and my family. Please continue to pray for the function of the new kidney. God's blessings to you all.
Greetings from Mayo clinic in Arizona!!! Patti and I got the call late Monday evening August 14. We left for Arizona Tuesday morning and I had the kidney/pancreas transplant surgery Tuesday evening around 9 pm. Initially all went well with the surgery. Unfortunately, the pancreas was not receiving a sufficient blood supply and on Thursday afternoon I returned to surgery to have the pancreas removed. I still have my pancreas and it will still function as before but I will continue to be a type 1 diabetic.
I have received 2 rounds of dialysis at this point and my doctors say that the kidney looks good and are confidant that all with go well but I may need some more dialysis until the kidney is fully functional.
Today for the first time I am able to sit up in the chair and am scheduled for 2 walks. The sooner I get up and around the quicker my body will recover. I don't know yet when I will be released from the hospital, but will transition to the Help in Healing Home here at the Mayo campus to continue my recovery.
Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support. I will contunue to update my progress.
update to scotts surgery. Scott was all prepped and ready to go into surgery but at the last moment the pancreas was deemed not viable and the surgery was cancelled. Please pray for Scott and Patti as they attempt to head home with heavy hearts.

As of this morning at 6 am I will be on my way to Phoenix, Arizona for the kidney/pancreas transplant. If everything goes according to plan I will arrive two hours later with surgery to follow. More updates to come. Prayers for myself and my family would be appreciated.
