One month later, on February 20, 2009, Kenza was riding her bike through a crosswalk, going about her usual day. She had the right of way, but the oncoming car did not slow down, despite the lights flashing in the street. Unfortunately, the car struck Kenza. The impact of the collision that day flipped her life on its head, both literally and figuratively. Her body sustained a cervical spinal cord injury. Consequently, her body was paralyzed from the chest down, with the inclusion of her hands.
For the past 11 years, Kenza has relied on others to get around, being lifted out of her wheelchair and into someone’s vehicle, or using ride services that are not always available, unpredictable and overall quite exhausting. These experiences have ultimately led Kenza to avoid the process as often as possible, further limiting her quality of life.
Despite all of this, Kenza maintains a highly positive outlook and continues to be motivated, and motivates others. She is inspired to grow and move forward with her life, aspiring towards independence and a life that allows her to be of greater service to others. If you knew Kenza you would see she is often the brightest light in the room often putting others needs before her own.
A group of her friends have set up this fundraising opportunity to help Kenza become more independent.
Kenza envisions a future where she will once again be fully mobile and able to user her full body as she once did. As she works daily towards that goal she needs some help.
She would like to be able to drive her own modified vehicle. She is trained to drive with hand controls, and has already passed a driving program and has a license that allows her to once again take to the streets and get herself where she needs to be.
Your generous donation will assist monumentally in allowing Kenza to purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle and fund any further modifications specifically needed to drive it safely, easily and efficiently. This will propel her forward and impact her life in endless ways. She will be able to accomplish what most take for granted – simple tasks like going to pick up groceries, small errands, and getting regular medical appointments.
She will also be able to more effectively and consistently partake in programs that encourage the strengthening, and even healing, of her body! The list is exhaustive, as this gift will open up a brand new world for Kenza. Some of the funds raised will also help modify her own living environment so she can more easily access basic needs without relying on someone else.
A car severely impacted her life in 2009… and now this new vehicle and some adjustments to her own apartment can infuse her with a new sense of freedom and independence.
