More than 123,000 people in the United States are on a waiting list for an organ transplant. Samantha Taylor is one of those people. She is 25-years-old with a blood type 0 and is currently living in Pittsburgh awaiting a kidney and pancreas transplant.
Samantha was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of five. Over the years, she developed kidney failure. Just after graduating from Virginia State in May 2014, her doctors announced that she would be on dialysis for the rest of her life or until being called for transplant. Dialysis has impacted Samantha in many ways. She is limited in her social life with family and friends, is unable to run with her dog, Daisy, and can only work part-time hours. Samantha looks forward to the day when she can lead a more active lifestyle through the gift of transplantation.
Transplants are lifesaving but financially draining. Funding this procedure is a monumental task as there will be many medical expenses not covered by insurance such as co-pays, anti-rejection medications, and travel expenses. This presents a challenge that Samantha cannot meet alone and she now needs assistance from her community.
To help with the financial burden of Samantha’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years.
