I am writing to ask for your prayers and support for my wife, Margie Funk. In January of this year, Margie had a nearly catastrophic heart attack. Her life was saved through the emergency placement of a stent in the left side of her heart. As a result, her heart function was severely diminished and has continued to degrade throughout this year. I am happy to report that Margie has recently received another life-saving operation. Doctors at Allegheny General Hospital have implanted a heart pump (Left Ventricular Assist Device) to do the job that her heart is no longer able to do. I am so grateful for all of the life-extending care that she has received, however, the VAD is only a temporary solution. Margie needs a heart transplant.
As most of you know, Margie worked full-time as a registered nurse up until her heart attack in January. The lack of this income has been a strain for our family. Although Margie has insurance, the costs associated with her survival are overwhelming. The cost of care required as she carries the VAD is significant yet the cost of care following a heart transplant will be staggering. Post transplant medications alone will be close to $6,000 a month initially and will remain costly for the rest of Margie’s life.
To help alleviate the financial burden of heart transplantation, a fundraising campaign in Margie’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Mid-Atlantic Heart Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant related expenses only. Please consider making a donation today.
Margie and I have raised five wonderful children who have given us ten terrific grandchildren. Margie’s fervent hope is to be able to watch her grandchildren grow up. Please be generous with your prayers and contributions to help us through this difficult time.
Thank you and God bless,
Kenneth L. Funk and
Shoshanna Palmer (Margie and Ken’s daughter)

I want to thank all of you that were able to come to our dinner on the 17th, as well as those that couldn't make it but have so generously donated. (And I thank those that can't donate right now because I know we are in your thoughts and prayers!) We had a terrific time and it turned out good. I'm sorry the weather got bad and some had to leave early due to the snow and the bad roads, but I guess that's what I get for picking a day in January! The steroids and anti-rejection meds I am on make me very shaky and very cold all the time, so I'm not especially liking this 0 weather with -0 wind chill temps, but I guess most of the country can say the same! I tried to put a picture on here that was taken and put in our local newspaper, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it. But we did have a good time and I thank God every day for the blessing of life that He has given to me. My prayer is that He will enable me to do the work that He has cut out for me to do. I know He saved me for a reason! I hope you all have an awesome day - and be careful - it's COLD outside!!
I want to say a quick thank You to all who have so graciously donated to this campaign thus far. It is so appreciated.
Also, I want to remind you about the "Celebration of Life" dinner event that is coming up on January 17, 2014. If you have not yet purchased tickets, and would like to do so, please contact me at [email protected]. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door if necessary, however if you plan to attend, we need to know so we can have an approximate count of how many will be there. This would help us so very much.
I just want to say a huge thank you to all who have donated to this website on my behalf. You have touched my heart and we so much appreciate the support. God bless you all!
Greetings to everyone! First of all let me say a huge thank you to all of you who have contributed as well as sent notes. We so much appreciate your support!
I wanted to tell you that on October 31, I received my heart transplant. I am blessed to be home and doing well. I have a good bit of recovery time left and I have a lot of restrictions for the first few months - but I am feeling great and am so thankful for the blessing of life that I have received!
We are also blessed in that our insurance is picking up more than what we had originally thought, however the many ongoing doctor visits and a multitude of ongoing tests that have to be done still are going to require a lot of out of pocket expenses, so for that reason, we still need your financial support.
I pray God blesses each of you richly!
So good talking to you. You are an inspiration to so many people.
