In my career as a registered nurse since 1974, I have prided myself on being dedicated to the care of others. I’m finding it difficult now to have to become the patient instead of the caregiver. On December 7, 2009, due to a health crisis, I found myself suddenly leaving my beloved career as a school nurse for Odyssey Academy (former Hoover Drive) with the Greece Central School District. I miss the staff but mostly I miss the students.
Breathing is something most of us take for granted; I know I did. When your lungs do not provide the air you need, your body becomes nonfunctional and movement is difficult. I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2006. Even with oxygen, I have a difficult time with simple tasks such as simply walking from one room to another. After breathing tests, x-rays, and CT scans of my lungs, the results show that the disease has progressed and a lung transplant is going to be necessary.
This brings me to the purpose of my letter. Organ transplantation is life-saving, but expensive. My insurance company will only cover 80 percent of my medical bills. This leaves Danny and me to worry about the other 20 percent of medical bills and all other uninsured expenses, including travel to Cleveland and lodging there. As a result, Cleveland Clinic Medical Center recommends fund raising.
To help offset my uninsured costs, a fundraising campaign in my honor has been established with HelpHOPELive (formerly NTAF), a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. All contributions are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the New York Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. You can help make a difference in my life. Please consider making a contribution.Your prayers, support and financial gifts are greatly appreciated and will help my family and me through this most difficult time.
With my sincere gratitude,
Maggie Gell

Dear Maggie, I guess I didn't realize that you were at the point where a lung transplant was necessary. I will do what I can to help. You know I will always remember your birthday. It's a shame we haven't gotten together more often, but you are in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there. Love you.

I don't know if you remember me or not, but I understand that I was one of the only students to call you "Nurse Gell". I was at Hoover Drive from 1982-1983. I now live in the Lake George area with my wife and three kids, the oldest of which is a sophomore in high school. I have my own business in the amusement park industry. I never forgot you and I was saddened to hear about your illness but I will pray for you daily. Oh, by the way, Mrs. Lawler told me to tell you that I am now 42.

Hey, Maggie. So sorry to hear about your health situation. Oh I remember those days at Hoover Drive. I remember sending you the BO list so you would talk to the students about personal hygiene ( got us off the hook!!!) You will be in my prayers. Take care.

Dear, dear Maggie,
There is a group of Apollo retirees who meet once a month for lunch. This past Tuesday, Barb Bottoni let us know about your plight. We all chipped in to help you move on with your healing process. You would have loved the stories we all told about you! So much love is being sent your way from some old friends. I will be thinking of you on August 27...did you remember I share that day with you? Take care of yourself.

Dear Maggie ~ I certainly do remember you! There are few educators who earn respect and trust the way a School Nurse does, and YOU were the best I've ever known. You reached out to improve the lives os students and staff every day. (I will never forget the day you called by physician from your office and insisted that I leave work to be seen immediately.) I am sorry to hear about your health crisis and will chip in today. I will keep you in my prayers.

You may not remember me, Maggie, but i was a bit of a hypochondriac as a kid, so i definitely remember you. Youre in my thoughts, i have tremendous faith in you.

Ms. Gell- Thanks so much for all you did for my friends and me back in middle/high school- we so appreciated it even if we didn't show it at the time. You helped so many of us kids- now it's time that we help you. Let me know if I can do anything else to help you raise some funds. Saying prayers and sending wishes your way.

Mrs Gell! This news saddens me. I dont know if you remember me or my brothers Tim, Matt, and Ben. You were a second mom to all of us odyssey students and espcially to my brothers and I. We all have a lot of respect for you in all you did for us. I will be praying extra hard for you during this trying time as well as passing along your story. Please keep your head up and moving forward!!! Hugs!!!
