Gary’s life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with ILD (Interstitial Lung Disease) about a year ago. He was first diagnosed in 2013 with COPD but has continued to struggle with breathing on a daily basis. About a year ago his Cardiologist saw how he struggled on a day to day basis and decided to order more tests on his own (not related to Cardiology) and discovered Gary had IPF. He immediately saw a Pulmonologist who put him on full-time oxygen to get through each day. His disease is rapidly progressing and his only chance of survival is a lung transplant.
Gary grew up in Vermont and upon Graduation from High School enlisted in the Air Force for 4 years during the Vietnam War. He came home and moved to Pennsylvania in 1972 where he has been employed by the same employer for the past 45 years. He is very active in his church. He is a very unique person as he would go out of his way to help anyone out at any time. He is looking for a better quality of life for many years to come with his friends and family. Together with his family he is committed to fighting this disease.
Transplants are life saving but can put a huge financial burden on the family. Even with his medical insurance, Gary is facing very high expenses, including his wife relocating anywhere from three to six months to be closer to him during this whole process. The post-transplant medications are astronomical and are not covered through insurance (one costing over $10,000.00 a month). Some of the medications he will need to take the rest of his life.
Family and friends of Gary Small are raising money to pay for uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.
Gary has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility to the full extent allowed by law for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Donate Now button.

Thank you for your support!
On behalf of Gary and his family, we thank you in advance for your kind support, prayers and generosity.
Gratefully,
Diane Small, Gary’s Wife
October 21, 2018 - I am almost seven months out from the transplant. I spent almost two months in the hospital after the transplant before returning to home on May 7, 2018. I was readmitted June 7, 2018 with complications. I am going to Temple October 25, 2018 for evaluation to do Pulmonary Rehabilitation there. My doctor wants me to do 2 sessions per week for 18 weeks. I have also been seeing an Oncologist at Temple because prior to my release from the hospital in May they found CLL Lymphoma. This disease has brought on severe depression which I am trying to deal with on a daily basis. I want to thank everyone who have donated and are still donating to my fund. The medical expenses have added up and all your donations have helped me financially.
March 25,2018 - Received the call from the Temple Lung Transplant Team that they have a lung for me. I traveled to Temple and on March 26, 2018 received a new left lung.
January 29, 2018 - Received a call from Temple. I have finally been put on the Lung Transplant List. Now we anxiously wait for the call.
went to see the Temple neurologist on the 18th he cleared me so one step closer
I want to thank all that have signed my guest book and all those who have donated either prayers or money as you able to do!!!
Still waiting for more test results, but I think everything is good.
